How to Get Abs Fast: A Realistic Timeline and Plan

Updated 6 min read

The fastest way to get abs is to train them 2 to 3 times a week while losing body fat at a steady 1 to 2 pounds a week; how many weeks that takes depends on how much fat covers your abs today. Nobody can promise abs in 7 days, but you can find out where you start and how long your own path should take.

Ab scan

The free scan above reads one photo and returns a score out of 100, a body-fat range and your weakest zone. That starting point is what turns “fast” into a number of weeks. You can also start training right now with the generator below.

What decides how fast you get abs

Two things have to be true for abs to show, and they move at different speeds:

Factor What it means How fast it changes
Muscle The rectus abdominis and obliques are developed enough to show shape Strength gains come within weeks of regular training
Body fat The layer of fat over the abs is thin enough for that shape to be visible Limited by a safe rate of weight loss, about 1 to 2 lb a week

The muscle part is the quick one. In a 2011 randomized trial, sedentary adults who did 7 ab exercises five days a week for six weeks managed 47 curl-ups on average at the end, against 32 in the control group. The same trial found no significant change in their belly fat, body fat percentage or waist size (Vispute et al., 2011).

So the fat part sets the pace. If you are already lean, a few weeks of ab training can make lines appear. If not, the timeline is mostly the time it takes to lose fat.

How many weeks will it take? Do the math

The CDC says people who lose weight at a gradual, steady pace of about 1 to 2 pounds a week are more likely to keep it off (CDC, page dated January 17, 2025). Applied to your situation, the timeline is simple division:

Weight to lose before abs show At 2 lb a week At 1 lb a week
5 lb about 3 weeks about 5 weeks
10 lb about 5 weeks about 10 weeks
20 lb about 10 weeks about 20 weeks
30 lb about 15 weeks about 30 weeks

Two limits to keep in mind. Weight lost is not only fat, so these are minimums. And you don’t know the first column by looking in the mirror; that’s what the scan’s body-fat range is for.

Why “abs in 7 days” doesn’t work

A 7-day promise would need fat to disappear far faster than the 1 to 2 pounds a week the CDC describes as steady. Crash diets and hundreds of crunches a day don’t change that, because ab exercises don’t burn the fat sitting on the abs, as the 2011 trial above showed.

What a week can do: start the habit, learn the exercises with good form, measure your starting point, and lose the first pound or two. That is a real start.

A 4-week plan to get abs as fast as is safe

This plan combines the three things that move the timeline: ab training, overall activity and eating. Follow it, then rescan to see what changed.

Week Ab workouts Other activity Eating
1 3 × 10 min, beginner level Walk 20 min on 5 days Write down what you eat for 3 days, no changes yet
2 3 × 10 min, harder version of 1 exercise Walk 25 min on 5 days Cut one daily sugary drink or snack
3 3 × 15 min Walk 30 min on 5 days (150 min total) Add a protein source to every meal
4 3 × 15 min, add a round or a dumbbell Keep 150 min, add one longer walk or bike ride Keep weeks 2 and 3, check your weight once a week

The activity target in week 3 matches the CDC’s recommendation for adults: 150 minutes a week of moderate activity such as brisk walking, plus muscle-strengthening on at least 2 days that includes the abdomen (CDC, page dated December 20, 2023).

Which ab exercises get results fastest?

Choose exercises that activate the abs strongly and that you can do with clean form. In a 2001 study at San Diego State University (30 adults, 13 exercises, muscle activity measured), the bicycle crunch ranked first for the rectus abdominis and the captain’s chair knee raise first for the obliques (ACE, May 14, 2001). The study is small and dates from 2001, so treat it as a guide for choosing, not a guarantee.

A quick session built on that list:

Exercise Work Rest
Bicycle crunch 40 s 20 s
Reverse crunch 40 s 20 s
Plank 40 s 20 s
Russian twist 40 s 20 s
Dead bug 40 s 20 s

Two rounds take 10 minutes. The best ab workouts page compares more options, including gym moves like the captain’s chair.

Three people, three timelines

These are illustrations of the math above, not promises.

  • Already lean, abs faintly visible. Most of the work is muscle, so regular ab training is the main lever, with little or no fat to lose.
  • A little soft around the middle, about 10 lb to lose. At 1 to 2 lb a week, plan on roughly 5 to 10 weeks of steady eating and activity, with ab training throughout so the muscle is ready when the fat comes off.
  • 30 lb or more to lose. Think in seasons, not weeks: 15 to 30 weeks at a safe pace. Abs are a good long-term goal; the first wins are energy, strength and a smaller waist.

How to track progress without guessing

The mirror is unreliable from one day to the next because of light, water and posture. Use the same photo setup every week, at the same time of day, and compare scores rather than impressions. Our scan gives the same result for the same photo, shows its margin of error, and the guided pose keeps your weekly photos comparable.

The paid program does this for you: a new scan each week, before-and-after photos lined up automatically, and an 8 to 12 week plan that adjusts when you miss a day. Prices are shown upfront.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get abs in 7 days?

No source supports it. The CDC describes about 1 to 2 pounds a week as a steady pace of weight loss, which is far slower than a week-long promise needs.

How long does it take to get abs?

It depends on how much fat covers your abs today. The page does the calculation at a steady 1 to 2 pounds a week and shows three example profiles.

Can you do abs every day to get them faster?

Guidelines set a minimum of two strengthening days a week. We plan 2 to 3 sessions with rest days between them, and we found no source showing that daily sessions work better.

Do ab exercises burn belly fat?

In a 2011 randomised trial, 24 adults did 7 ab exercises five days a week for six weeks. They got stronger, but their abdominal fat, fat mass and waist did not fall significantly against the control group (Vispute et al., 2011).
