The generator never asks for an account. The timer keeps counting if you check a message, the screen stays on, and sounds are off by default, so your music or podcast keeps playing at its normal volume.
Do you need equipment for ab workouts at home?
No. Bodyweight moves load the abs as well as most gadgets. A 2014 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse study measured muscle activity in 16 adults and found that none of the 8 ab devices tested (including an ab wheel, an ab roller and ab straps) activated the rectus abdominis more than a plain crunch on the floor (ACE, April 23, 2014).
What you do need at home is a little planning around your space. The table covers the usual limits.
| Home limit | What to do |
|---|---|
| Neighbors below, thin floors | Skip jumping. Every exercise in the routines below is low-impact. |
| Hard floor, no mat | Fold a thick towel or blanket under your hips and lower back. |
| Small room | You need about 6 by 3 feet (a mat’s length plus your arms overhead). |
| Kids or a pet around | Pick a 5-minute session; it’s easier to protect. |
| Wrist pain in planks | Do planks on your forearms instead of your hands. |
| No floor space at all | Use standing moves: see the standing abs workout. |
Three at-home ab routines
All three use zero equipment and no jumping. Do the exercises in order, rest as shown, then repeat for the number of rounds listed.
5-minute routine (any level, good for busy days)
Work 40 seconds, rest 20 seconds, one round.
| Exercise | Work | Rest | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead bug | 40 s | 20 s | Lower back stays on the floor |
| Toe-touch crunch | 40 s | 20 s | Reach up, not forward |
| Heel taps | 40 s | 20 s | Shoulders stay lifted |
| Plank | 40 s | 20 s | Forearms if wrists hurt |
| Seated knee tuck | 40 s | 0 s | Lean back slightly, hands behind you |
10-minute routine (beginner to intermediate)
Work 40 seconds, rest 20 seconds, two rounds.
| Exercise | Work | Rest | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crunch | 40 s | 20 s | Breathe out on the way up |
| Reverse crunch | 40 s | 20 s | Roll the hips, don’t swing the legs |
| Side plank on knees, left | 40 s | 20 s | Hips in line with shoulders |
| Side plank on knees, right | 40 s | 20 s | Same on the other side |
| Bird dog | 40 s | 20 s | Opposite arm and leg, slow |
15-minute routine (intermediate)
One minute of warm-up (slow knee lifts and trunk rotations), then two rounds. Work 45 seconds, rest 15 seconds.
| Exercise | Work | Rest | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rowing crunch | 45 s | 15 s | Knees and chest meet in the middle |
| Flutter kicks | 45 s | 15 s | Bend knees if your back arches |
| Bicycle crunch | 45 s | 15 s | Rotate the shoulders, not just the elbows |
| Plank shoulder tap | 45 s | 15 s | Feet wide, hips still |
| Hip lift | 45 s | 15 s | Small lift, controlled lowering |
| Russian twist | 45 s | 15 s | Feet on the floor to start |
| Bear plank | 45 s | 15 s | Knees an inch off the floor |

How many times a week should you do ab workouts at home?
Two or three home ab sessions a week is a reasonable target. The CDC recommends that adults do muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days a week, working all major muscle groups including the abdomen, plus 150 minutes of moderate activity such as brisk walking (CDC, page dated December 20, 2023).
A simple home week could look like this:
| Day | Session |
|---|---|
| Monday | 10-minute ab routine |
| Wednesday | 30-minute brisk walk + 5-minute ab routine |
| Friday | 15-minute ab routine |
| Weekend | Walk, bike or any activity you like |
How to make home ab exercises harder without weights
Once a routine feels easy, you have four ways to progress at home, all free:
- Slow down. Take three seconds to lower in every crunch or leg raise.
- Lengthen the lever. A leg raise with straight legs is harder than with bent knees; a plank on your hands and toes is harder than on your knees.
- Add time or a round. Go from 40 to 45 seconds, then add a third round.
- Use household weight. A full water bottle or a backpack with books works for Russian twists and crunches. A real dumbbell is easier to hold: see the dumbbell ab workout.
Common mistakes in home ab workouts
- Doing the same video every day. Your abs adapt, and so does your motivation. Rotate the exercises.
- Training on a soft bed or couch. The surface gives way and your lower back takes the load. Use the floor with a towel.
- Holding your breath during planks. Breathe slowly through the whole hold.
- Pulling on your head in crunches. Your hands only support your head.
Why home ab workouts alone won’t flatten your stomach
Ab exercises strengthen the muscle but don’t target the fat on top of it. In a 2011 trial, 24 adults did 7 ab exercises five days a week for six weeks; their abs got stronger, but belly fat, body fat percentage and waist size did not change significantly (Vispute et al., 2011). Home workouts build the muscle; your overall activity and what you eat decide whether it shows.
To know which of the two is holding you back, run the free scan. It reads one photo, gives a score out of 100, a body-fat range, your weakest zone and a 7-day routine you can do at home. The photo is deleted after the analysis.
If you want a plan that follows you for 8 to 12 weeks, with a new scan each week and before-and-after photos, the paid program is listed with its prices upfront.

Frequently asked questions
Can you get abs from home workouts?
You can build ab strength at home with no equipment: a 2014 ACE study found no ab device beat a plain crunch. Seeing your abs also depends on body fat.
Is a 10-minute ab workout enough?
For a strengthening session, yes. The CDC asks for muscle-strengthening that includes the abdomen on at least 2 days a week, and the 10-minute routine on this page is a full session.
Do I need a mat or equipment?
No equipment. The routines on this page use bodyweight only.
How often should I do home ab workouts?
Two to three times a week, with rest days between. That meets the two-day minimum from the CDC and NHS.
